Making water visible: LEGO® demonstrator for the OOWV at IFAT 2026

For the VKU's joint stand at IFAT 2026, ModulAREbricks developed a large-scale LEGO® model for the OOWV (Oldenburgisch-Ostfriesischer Wasserverband). The model visualizes key aspects of water management and shows how water is used, purified, stored, and distributed in various areas of life and the economy.

The demonstrator was presented by OOWV, together with IWAG and Niedersachsen Wasser, at the joint VKU booth at IFAT 2026. Smart Data Worx was also involved in the implementation and project coordination.

The aim of the model was to clearly illustrate key topics related to water management, water use, purification, groundwater and infrastructure, and to make them tangible in the context of the trade fair.

ModulAREbricks developed a three-dimensional LEGO® model that not only shows the surface but also reveals underlying layers of earth, groundwater, and water-bearing structures. This makes connections tangible that often remain hidden in traditional plans or presentations.

Content areas of the model

Water management: including sewage treatment plant, water purification process, technical installations and visible waterways.

Agriculture: including fields, agricultural use, water requirements, and reference to groundwater and precipitation.

Industry: including industrial water usage, cleaning, office buildings and technical infrastructure.

Residential area: with houses, everyday water use, sealed surfaces, rainwater retention and urban infrastructure.

Use cases and staging

·  Water purification in the sewage

    treatment plant

· Groundwater and soil layers

· Rainwater retention basin  sealed

  surfaces

· Water use in residential areas

· Water requirements in agriculture

· Industrial water use and -cleaning

· Interaction of nature,

· Infrastructure and use

Technical elements

Several lighting functions were integrated into the model. In the wastewater treatment plant, LED rings illustrate the water purification process: a greenish-blue ring represents the initial purification state, a clear blue ring represents purified water. Additionally, houses, a barn, and an office building in the industrial area were illuminated to highlight different areas of use.

Added value of the model

The demonstrator made complex water management concepts tangible at the trade fair. Visitors could explore different areas directly on the model, ask questions, and spatially understand the role of water in agriculture, industry, housing, and infrastructure.
